SOCIALISTS CONFIRM SNAP ELECTION IS STILL A PRIORITY FOR THEM

21 november, 2017

The opposition Party of Socialists (PSRM) has stated that an early parliamentary election is remaining a priority for the Party and for President Igor Dodon, as per the Statement the Party has adopted on the results of the unsuccessful ‘anti-Chirtoaca referendum’ held in the capital city last Sunday.

The plebiscite, initiated by the Socialists, was recognized as not valid because of a poor voter turnout – only 17.5%, whereas a necessary minimum has to be 33%. The Socialists are maintaining that the poor attendance was due to the authorities, Right parties and particularly the Liberals, who boycotted the referendum “because they have placed their accords above the struggle against the lawlessness of last 10 years in Chisinau”.

“We shall continue our struggle for each Chisinau citizen, including for those who have become a part of the game being run by the Right parties: Vlad Plahotniuc’s Democrats, Maya Sandu’s Party of Action and Solidarity, Andrei Nastase’s DA Platform and Mihai Ghimpu’s Liberals. We regret that a part of Chisinau citizens fell victims to the Right organizations’ backstage accords and combinations”, said the PSRM Statement.

Its authors further held that the capturing of power institutions in Moldova, which started from the Parliament, Government, Constitutional Court etc. is now expanding to the level of local administrations, in particular of Chisinau and other populated areas across the country.

“The Democratic Party, controlling the Moldovan Government and the parliamentary majority, is provoking a further split of the Moldovan society by raising the questions on renaming the official language [from Moldovan into Romanian], on fixing in the Constitution the country’s external vector [towards Europe] without whatever consultations with the civil society, and by constantly provoking our country’s main strategic partner – the Russian Federation. All this is done to distract the society’s attention from the deplorable socio-economic situation in the republic, from a demographic crisis and from the continuing exodus of citizens from the country”, said the Statement.

The Socialists wrote that a snap parliamentary election remains a priority of not solely the PSRM but also of the Moldovan President, “and if only a slightest possibility appears for announcing such an election, it shall be used”.

The Party of Socialists stated its intention to brisk up the ongoing campaign for the country’s transition to the presidential government. The Socialists have already collected 300 thousand citizens’ signatures for a transition to a presidential republic, and by February 2018 the number of signatures for a presidential republic will reach 1 million.

The Party reported also that starting from next week all PSRM regional and territorial organizations across the republic will hold their reporting/election conferences as a stage of preparation for the forthcoming parliamentary election.

According to the Statement, the list of PSRM candidates for single-member constituencies will be formed by using the system of preliminary voting (primaries).

“In the nearest future, the Party will start nominating candidates for participation in the internal PSRM primaries. Each regional party organization will nominate its candidates for the formation of a party ticket. The next parliamentary election will be the most important one in the history of our country, for it will determine if Moldova will continue its existence as a state. And we shall be preparing for this crucial election in earnest”, said the PSRM Statement.
