PRESIDENT DODON IS SURE PARLIAMENTARY MAJORITY WILL NOT BE TRYING TO IMPEACH HIM…

29 december, 2017

Moldovan President Igor Dodon is convinced that the parliamentary majority will not be seeking to dismiss him from power in the incoming year.

Speaking on the NTV-Moldova channel on Thursday night, Dodon said: “The law stipulates that if the parliamentary majority disagrees with what the president proposes or what he blocks, there may be several ways out of such impasses: either to try and find a common language, as this has been done all the 26 years until now when conflicts were arising, or to address to citizens for advice”.

Dodon remarked that the ruling coalition is not able to control or command the President, but at the same time they do not wish to reach agreements with the head of state on disputable matters.

“Ideally, we must sit at the negotiating table and reach accords amicably – on the candidacies of ministers, on the laws I am categorically against, and so forth. Such has been the practice in Moldova over all the 26 years of our independence. This is what a state is supposed to be. We need a balance”, said the President, who believes that in such a situation, it is necessary to address to the people.

“The people have elected the President, so the people decide the President’s fate. I am ready for such referendum – at any moment. But the ruling coalition realizes very well that citizens will be on my side, so the coalition will not agree to a plebiscite. Until the parliamentary election [end of 2018] they will not make even a single step in this direction. The ruling regime realizes that in the current conditions any attempt to dismiss me will only push up my popularity rating and, accordingly, the rating of the Party of Socialists [which Dodon had headed until his election president at the end of 2016]”, said the head of state.
