U.S. EMBASSY MAKES A SOMEWHAT DIFFERENT ACCOUNT OF DODON-PETTIT MEETING

08 august, 2018

The United States Embassy in Chisinau did not confirm President Igor Dodon’s coverage of the meeting he held with the United States Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic of Moldova, James D. Pettit, on Tuesday. The information on the meeting appeared on Tuesday evening on the Embassy’s page in the social networks.

The Embassy wrote: “Ambassador Pettit met with Moldovan President Igor Dodon on August 7 to discuss a range of bilateral issues. The Ambassador expressed a desire to see a continued strong relationship between our two countries, regardless of the results of upcoming Parliamentary elections”.

“The Ambassador also highlighted the importance of ensuring that the upcoming elections be peaceful and transparent and conform with democratic norms. The Ambassador reiterated his concerns about the recent overturning of municipal elections as well as flawed legislation, including on capital amnesty, and the potential for this legislation to incentivize money laundering and to damage Moldova’s business climate”, wrote the American Embassy.

It did not write anything about the discussion of the question concerning the construction of a new U.S. Embassy in place of the former National Stadium in Chisinau, although President Igor Dodon put an accent on this topic in his Facebook coverage of the conversation with Ambassador James Pettit. As a matter of fact, Igor Dodon has already written several times that he had proposed Ambassador Pettit to give up the intention to build a new Embassy there “because most Chisinau citizens disapprove of this idea”.
