GUAM COUNTRIES TO PROMOTE IN UN THEIR DRAFT RESOLUTION ON PROTRACTED CONFLICTS

08 octomber, 2018

Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova will be promoting in the United Nations their draft Resolution on the settlement of protracted conflicts, the 4 Prime Ministers have decided at the Conference of the Heads of Government of the countries forming the Organization for Democracy and Economic Development GUAM that was held in Chisinau on Friday.

At the forum's final news conference, Moldovan Prime Minister Pavel Filip stated that the GUAM countries have decided to unite efforts for settling this question "because protracted conflicts are the problem common for all the four". "Cooperation in the GUAM framework will continue rendering a positive influence on our efforts to realize our common goals to consolidate democracy and develop economy and commerce between the GUAM Member States. A matter of no less significance is our cooperation in strengthening security in our region and in overcoming challenges and in opposing threats. We have come to a conclusion that regional solidarity for ensuring security must be our first-priority objective", stated the Moldovan Premier.

Pavel Filip characterized as Moldova's important achievement the adoption by the United Nations General Assembly Session of the Resolution on Russian troop withdrawal from the Republic of Moldova territory.

"We are convinced that it will be easier to achieve a peaceful settlement of territorial conflicts if the countries concerned have no foreign troops in their territories", said the Moldovan Prime Minister.

Filip was supported by his colleague from the Republic of Georgia, Mamuka Bakhtadze.

"Russia keeps undermining our efforts aimed at creating better living conditions for our citizens residing in the occupied territories. Since the moment of the Russian invasion, the population of these regions [South Ossetia and Abkhazia] has diminished 5-fold", stated the Georgian Prime Minister.

Ukrainian Premier Vladimir Groysman stated that protracted conflicts bring about only poverty and violation of human rights.

"It is important that all democratic countries should get consolidated so as to find instruments to reject this aggression. We must force the aggressor state, Russia, to give up their barbaric plans that bring only wars and human losses to our peaceful countries. These aggressive invasions, when we speak of protracted conflicts, bring only poverty and violation of human rights. We all can see this in Ukraine as well", stated Vladimir Groysman.
