EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT’S RESOLUTION WILL HARDLY BE REALIZED IN CONCRETE DEEDS – EXPERT

16 november, 2018

This week’s Resolution of the European Parliament will hardly be realized in concrete actions or deeds, with an account of an approaching parliamentary election, presumes Chisinau political scientist Corneliu Ciurea.

On Thursday, he said during the debates organized in Chisinau to discuss the Resolution’s possible influence on the situation in Moldova that the document “is in fact carrying nothing new, and is only showing the consolidation of the European Union’s critical point of view, particularly on the political life on Moldova”.

“The European Parliament, being under a strong influence of the European People's Party (EPP), unfortunately resorts to an extreme politicization of its own decisions on Moldova. Some of them are just ridiculous, for instance the initiative to focus the financial assistance for Moldova only on the civil society, independent media, regional authorities and small and medium enterprises. This idea looks at least strange, to put it mildly, and it goes contrary to cooperation principles. We cannot call as something positive, either, the recommendation to publish the Second Kroll Report”, said the expert.

In his opinion, the European Parliament’s criticism will hardly be put into life. Corneliu Ciurea referred to the previous Resolution of July 5, which has actually led only to the suspension of the EU’s macro-financial assistance.

“I guess the new Resolution [of November 14] is aimed rather at providing a favorable climate for some Right parties in the run-up to elections. So everything will depend exactly on the election process. If the authorities ensure a transparent and fair election, then after the polls Moldova may return to a dialog with the European Union, and there are chances for normalization of the relationship”, said Corneliu Ciurea.

Moldovan political scientist and historian Anatol Taranu believes that with this Resolution, the European Union has finally turned the page called “Moldova’s success story”.

“The Moldovan opposition has perceived the Resolution with satisfaction because it contains many things the opposition had long been fingering at. But our authorities, in their turn, are seriously concerned about the criticism made by the European Parliament. They cannot deny the fact that the European Union is Moldova’s main development partner, and that upsetting of relations with the EU will lead to a serious political and economic damage to the republic and, accordingly, to deterioration of the population’s life quality”, said Anatol Taranu.
