ACUM TO NOMINATE COMMON CANDIDATE FOR CHISINAU MAYOR – PREMIER

19 july, 2019

The ACUM bloc will propose a common candidate at the gubernatorial elections in Chisinau, announced Prime Minister Maia Sandu, who is leader of one of bloc parties – the Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS).

Speaking on local television, she said that it is obvious that the bloc will come as a single force at local elections on October 20. She said that the elections in Chisinau have a special importance, but refused to tell if Andrei Nastase is going to run for this post, saying that when the final candidature is approved, it will be made public.

Also, Sandu commented on the upcoming presidential elections, stressing that she does not care about the post of the head of state.

“I cannot say it 100%, but this is my position as of today. I have never categorically excluded this, but now this position is not interesting for me. I care to remain in my current post and make as more as possible for citizens”, Sandu said.

The premier commented the need of repeated elections in several single-member constituencies (at least in 3 – Sandu, Nastase and independent MP Viorel Melnic stepped down from Parliament), saying that the previous authorities, adopting the mixed system, never thought about problems that may appear, but the new elections in these constituencies will anyway take place.

She said that she does not understand the reasons of Victor Melnic and does not want to speculate on this topic. Also, answering to the question about the intentions of Renato Usatii to come to the Parliament through elections in one of constituencies and the possibility of his inclusion in the coalition, Sandu said that the coming of Usatii will hardly change the current state of things in the Parliament.

“We do not conclude such agreements”, the premier said.

Also, Sandu commented on the situation with the Democratic Party, saying that many MPs and other members must leave to save this party.

“The party must go through a serious clean-up of ranks, which needs time”, Sandu said.

With all this, she did not exclude the possibility of cooperation with the DP, though only after the next parliamentary elections.

“This party needs time to regain people’s trust and after the next elections, if they manage to reform, a coalition may be discussed. But this is possible only after the next elections”, the premier stressed.
