EU EVALUATES PARTNERS BY DEEDS, BUT NOT STATEMENTS – EU DELEGATION HEAD

15 august, 2019

The European Union evaluates each partner on the basis of facts, but not just statements, said Ambassador Peter Michalko, Head of the European Union Delegation to Moldova.

Speaking on local television he said that the EU saw political will in the new Government, the desire to achieve results, which will bring favorable changes to citizens’ life, will make it better, and this fact meets EU interests in Moldova.

“The difficult situation (in mid-June) in fact did not allow having other opinion [except support to new authorities] and this is clearly seen in the position of Moldova’s external partners. The EU in recent years have been very clearly expressing its opinion on democratic standards and the situation with observing human rights in Moldova”, the diplomat reminded.

Nevertheless, he could not exactly say if the consensus between the EU, the US and Russia will continue in future, saying that at the beginning of June the unity of the sides’ views were due to the specificity of the situation.

Talking about priority directions for the new leadership, the diplomat pointed at the reform of judiciary, the investigation of the bank fraud, the raising of media independence, the de-politicization of state institutions.

“Illegal economic schemes, including smuggling, the selective justice, which is working according to the principle of a telephone call, all this must stop”, the EU representative stressed.
