PROSECUTION SERVICE ACQUITS ALEXEI ALEXEYEV OF ALL CHARGES

21 september, 2020

The Moldovan Prosecution Service has dropped all charges against civil society activist Alexei Alexeyev, and the Chisinau Court acquitted him.

Three years ago, Alexeyev was accused of “violence against a responsible civil servant”. He then brought on his private minibus audio equipment for an opposition rally organized near the building of the Moldovan public television company. He was detained on September 18, 2017 on the above-mentioned charges, and the law enforcement maintained that he had driven his motor vehicle into a police cordon.

After hearing the accusation, Alexeyev spent 2 months in a remand prison and under a house arrest. Later on, his case was remitted to the court.

The Alexeyev case was on the list of 38 politically motivated cases. The list was drawn up by a special brigade of prosecutors from the Prosecutor General's Office formed in February 2020 by the order of Prosecutor General Alexander Stoianoglo in response to the Report prepared by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. The Report said that in Moldova, there were instances of unlawful, insulting, selective and political prosecution of citizens.
