IGOR DODON CALLS MAIA SANDU’S TROOP WITHDRAWAL STATEMENTS AS HASTY

02 december, 2020

Incumbent President of Moldova Igor Dodon has called as “hasty” the recent statements by President-Elect Maia Sandu concerning the need to withdrawal Russian troops from Transnistria.

Speaking on the Moldova-1 public television channel on Tuesday night, Dodon said: “Those were hasty and ill-conceived statements. Apparently, Maia Sandu has not yet come out of her campaigning. Such statements run contrary to Moldova’s interests and to the striving for stabilizing the situation after the presidential election. I hope there are no external forces standing behind these statements – forces that would wish to provoke here in Moldova a new geopolitical conflict between Russia and the West. I surmise whose these interests are. In due time all this will come to the surface”.

In his words, Sandu’s sharp sayings resemble the early 1990s.

“We have not had anything of the sort for quite long. That’s what the president-elect’s statements have provoked here only a few weeks before inauguration. But we don’t need such a situation sharpening – we need stability. The peacekeeping forces stopped the bloodshed on the Dniester. They saved, are saving and will be further saving peace and calm on the river sides. The peacekeepers will be remaining here until a political solution for the Transnistrian conflict. We don’t want a return to the 1990s and defrosting of the conflict”, stated Igor Dodon.
