PRESIDENT MAIA SANDU SPEAKED FOR RESETTING RELATIONS WITH THE EUROPEAN UNION AND DEVELOPING RELATIONS WITH RUSSIA

15 january, 2021

The President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, spoke in favor of restarting relations with the European Union (EU) and developing relations with the Russian Federation. As Infotag reports, this was stated by Sandu during a discussion with Moldovan diplomats.

She recalled that “in 2018, due to anti-democratic violations in Chisinau, the EU stopped most of the assistance provided to Moldova.”

“And during 2020, the European Union was attacked and insulted several times by the pseudo-rulers from Chisinau. We need a reset of relations with our important partner, the European Union. Today we are overcoming the shameful pages of the history of our diplomacy,” the head of state said.

Sandu stressed that in a few days she will leave for Brussels to “resume the process of rapprochement between the Republic of Moldova and the EU, through democratic and economic reforms to turn Moldova into a European state - a state with European institutions, European schools, European hospitals, European roads , with a European future that acts exclusively in the interests of all citizens.”

“Of course, we want to bring Moldova to the European Union, but it is very important to maintain good, warm relations with other partners of our country. Including with other global or regional powers and old or new partners of our country,” she noted.

The official also noted “the complex agenda for the development of relations with Russia.”

“We have many areas in which we cooperate, we have many fellow citizens living in Russia, we have traditional trade and economic ties. But there are also some areas where we have disagreements. We want to overcome these challenges through dialogue, mutual respect and constructive relationships. Such relations presuppose respect for our neutrality, including by overcoming the situation in which we are in the process of the Transnistrian settlement, as well as the situation related to the presence of Russian troops on the territory of our country,” Sandu stated.

She stressed that “these goals can only be achieved through dialogue and partnership.”

“I will personally make every effort to have good relations with the Russian Federation. Obviously, this depends not only on Moldova, but also on our partners. Our goal is to build mutually respectful and mutually beneficial relations with the Russian Federation,” the President said.

She called the partnership with the United States “very good”, which “over the years has helped strengthen the country's independence and sovereignty.”

“I intend to strengthen this partnership. But this means that we, as a country, must contribute to this partnership as much as we can, including political or diplomatic solidarity on those issues of international politics where our interests coincide, and the United States relies on the support of other partner states,” the official emphasized.

The President also added that Moldova should be open for cooperation with other countries - China, Turkey, Israel, where “we have many fellow citizens or with whom we maintain important trade relations, but also with regions, unfortunately, less studied by our foreign policy - such as Arab states, India and other countries of Asia, Africa and Latin America.”
