PARLIAMENT ADOPTS DECLARATION ON EUROPEAN INTEGRATION OF THE REPUBLIC OF MOLDOVA

22 march, 2024

The Parliament has adopted a declaration on Moldova's European integration. 54 deputies from the ruling Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) party voted for the document's adoption late Thursday night.

According to the adopted declaration, "only Moldova's accession to the European Union will ensure the country's future as a sovereign, neutral, integral and democratic state, and the irreversible path of European integration and accession is a project of national priority of the Republic of Moldova."

The parliamentarians call on citizens and all political forces "to unite for the sake of a peaceful and European future of the country", "to show unity and solidarity to consolidate the political and social dialog for the sake of national interests and strategic goal - integration and accession of the Republic of Moldova to the European Union."

"European integration will contribute to the civil cohesion of society, will ensure Moldova's transition to sustainable economic development and will increase the state's capacity to promote an efficient social policy," the authors of the document express confidence.

In the document adopted, the parliament recalled that "for decades, the European Union has been a reliable partner of our country, providing unselfish logistical and financial support to solve Moldova's numerous internal problems". Moreover, "thanks to the generous support of the EU and member states, Moldova has overcome the crisis caused by the COVID pandemic, as well as the energy crisis in the winter of 2022-2023."

They ask the government to "take all necessary measures to organize the EU accession process, as well as to strengthen the public institutions involved in the negotiations."

"The European Union is a territory of peace. It was created as a peace project that put an end to wars in Europe, its creative energy was no longer aimed at destruction and aggression, but at prosperity and peaceful development between peoples," the Parliament Declaration reads.

Deputies of the opposition Bloc of Communists and Socialists (BCS) had left the session hall by the time the declaration was discussed, while independent deputies from among former Socialists and the former “Shor” party criticized the actions of the parliamentary majority. They said that "it makes no sense to adopt the declaration in a situation when a referendum on European integration will be held and citizens will have the opportunity to express themselves on this issue."
