PARLIAMENT REJECTS OPPOSITION PROPOSAL TO HEAR CEC CHAIRMAN ON SITUATION IN COMMISSION

28 march, 2024

The parliamentary majority did not support the initiative of the opposition Bloc of Communists and Socialists (BCS) to hear the chairman of the Central Electoral Commission, Angela Caraman.

BCS chairman, parliament deputy speaker, Vlad Batrincea, motivated his proposal by the fact that "two members of the Commission complained that they are being pressured and intimidated."

Batrincea called the situation "unprecedented". According to him, it is connected with the fact that the day before the CEC considered the OSCE report on local elections in Moldova, in which the organization recommended "depoliticization of the CEC" in the context of the upcoming presidential elections.

But the ruling PAS party did not support the proposal to hear the commission chairman.

Also on Thursday, secretary and member of the CEC, delegated to the commission by the ruling party, Alexandr Berlinschi, announced his resignation. He motivated his resignation by "personal motives."
