MOLDOVAN PARLIAMENT REFUSES TO MAKE UNIREA DATE A NATIONAL HOLIDAY HERE

27 march, 2017

On Friday, the Moldovan Parliament declined the Liberal Party’s legislative initiative on declaring one more national holiday in Moldova – March 27 as the Day of Unification [Unirea] of Moldova and Romania. The forum refused even to include the LP initiative into the plenary agenda.

Besides the initiative authors, the Liberals, there was only one faction – of 9 Liberal Democrats – who were going to vote for it.

As for the Parliament’s leading force, the Democratic faction, its Deputy Chairman Dumitru Diacov stated that the country has an ocean of other, more important, vital problems to tackle urgently instead of declaring new holidays.

Ex-President of Moldova, Chairman of the Communist Party MP Vladimir Voronin remarked that at the latest presidential election, the Liberal Party candidate, Mihai Ghimpu, polled merely 1.5% ballots – “about 22 thousand advocates of the unification idea, which is next to nothing”.

“These figures explain everything. The Liberals’ place is next to ex-MP Iurie Bolboceanu [in custody on suspicion of espionage and high treason]”, said Voronin.

Socialist MP Vlad Batrincea stated that the Liberal Party “is just collapsing, so it is desperately trying to underpin its miserable rating – even with such bizarre initiatives. I guess we should not take the Liberals seriously. This is the last Parliament they are present in”.
