FREEDOM MOLDOVA FUND CONDEMNS BEATING OF JOURNALISTS IN CHISINAU

27 june, 2017

The Freedom Moldova Human Rights Foundation condemned the beating of a female journalist in Chisinau on June, when the woman tried to make photo of a bad bun, sold to her in a shop.

“A similar violation as response to absolutely legal actions of a person, the violence for revenge, violence to conceal tough infringement of legislation, violation against a woman – all these are scandalous parts of a single whole: a crime. We have to clearly understand that what these two persons did is an impudent and cynic crime for which they must be punished”, the Foundation maintains it its written statement.

According to its authors, this case is raising many problems in the society.

“The approach to public places, authorized for entrepreneurial activities, as to one’s own property, where one can be rude, cheat to clients, can dictate his rules and even beat clients; the location of the kiosk, which trades in alcohol almost near church, authorized by the Primaria and the epidemiological inspection. Minor administrative protocols for sanitary norm violation, which may be challenged in court or even one can simply pay for it and keep receiving large profits, trading in alcohol without abiding any legal or sanitary norms. The using of the legislation on personal data protection as a justification for their animal behavior in relation to people (the two accused repeated many times during the beating and after it that the journalist had no right to take photos)”, the document says.

According to human rights activists, the most incorrect way of explaining the notion of “personal data protection” is due to many state agencies, which are using this law to close court proceedings, decline society’s and the media’s right to information.

The Fund draws law enforcement agencies’ attention to aggravating circumstances, indicated in the Criminal Code, such as committing of offence against a person on duty.

“Any deviations from this rule should be strictly suppressed. Thus, the Fund and the entire society are expecting a strict and prompt reaction from law enforcement on this case”, the statement says.
