INTERIOR MINISTRY SUGGESTS SENDING ACCIDENT-RESPONSIBLE MOTORISTS TO WORK IN MORGUES

05 february, 2018

The Moldovan Ministry of the Interior has proposed a new measure of punishment for motorists responsible for traffic accidents: to send them for correctional works to morgues as auxiliary personnel. Minister of the Interior Alexandru Jizdan presumes that such a measure could well be introduced into the legislation in force.

Speaking on a local private television channel last weekend, the minister said that the raised rates of fines introduced in Moldova last year and even the deprivation of driving licenses for certain traffic rule violations hasn’t made Moldovan motorists more disciplined.

“So, the repressive methodology is not bringing a desired result. But we have studied the experience gained in some other countries where motorists responsible for causing traffic accidents are forced to work in morgues. They can see the bodies of the people who perished in car crashes. I presume this would be a good lesson for those who don’t think of accident consequences”, said the Minister.

He described the car crash that happened in the Dubasari Raion the day before, when a young drunk motorist collided with a policeman standing on the roadside, killing him.

“That tragic event has made several families unhappy. It only proved that Moldovans are yet so hard in getting used to observing the law. Let’s try and recollect how many years it took us to teach our transport drivers to use safety belts, and how many human victims it took to achieve the required result”, said the Interior Minister.

The above-mentioned tragedy happened last Saturday near the Cosnita Village (Dubasari Raion), where a 21-year-old BMW motorist flew into a 28-year-old police officer standing on the roadside. The forensic examination showed the motorist was drunk. The motorist’s 18-year-old girlfriend, who was sitting next to him in the car, committed a suicide on the following day.
