ION TIGHINEANU ELECTED AS NEW HEAD OF MAS

10 april, 2019

The Moldovan Academy of Sciences got a new President – Doctor of Physics and Mathematics, Professor Ion Tighineanu, who was elected by secret ballot on Tuesday.

The 64-year-old scientist was the only candidate for this post, which became vacant after Gheorghe Duca resigned in November 2018.

Ex-Ukrainian Ambassador to Moldova Sergey Pirojkov, invited to the sitting, said that over 8 years of his mandate, he had an honor to present in Moldova not only Ukraine, but also this country’s science.

“In this period we created a center of demographic research, which is successfully functioning currently. Unfortunately, both in Ukraine and in Moldova the demographic situation is far from optimistic: the population migration is high, the birth rate is falling. I hope that results of our researches will be taken into account by our countries’ governments. A year ago, speaking in this room with a report on demographic problems, I unexpectedly was honored to become member of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Moldova”, said the ex-diplomat, calling on his colleagues to strengthen efforts on consolidating academic circles of the neighboring countries.

After being electing as president, Tighineanu said to journalists that he will do everything possible to match the vote of confidence he received from his colleagues in scientific and artistic work.

“We will be cooperating with the civil society. What is important for me is to improve the quality of scientific research, their value. I am optimist and I am sure that together with partners we will achieve much”, he said.

Tighineanu worked in the MAS Institute of Applied Physics in 1982-1998, then Vice-Rector of the Moldova Technical University on 1998-2004. In 2001 he founded the National Institute of Research and Materials Testing. In 2004, he was elected Deputy President, while in March 2013 - First Deputy President of the MAS.

Tighineanu was born Drochia raion of Moldova. He graduated from Moscow Engineering and Physics Institute in 1987, postgraduate studies in the Institute of Physics of the USSR Academy of Sciences.

As Infotag has already reported, ex-head of the MAS Gheorghe Duca and his spouse, who headed university within MAS, are suspected of the provision, which led to large-scale material damage to the Academy. A criminal case was started against them.
