PREMIER CHICU SAYS THAT AMENDMENTS ON ENLARGING SCM WILL BE ADOPTED AFTER PUBLIC CONSULTATIONS

09 december, 2019

The legislative amendments on enlarging the personal composition of the Superior Council of Magistracy to 15 persons from the current 12 will be approved in two weeks upon the completion of public consultations, Prime Minister Ion Chicu stated to the press on Monday after a weekly working meeting held with Moldova President Igor Dodon and Parliament Chairperson Zinaida Greceanii.

Chicu said that the bill, approved by the Parliament in a first reading last week, should permit to appoint new SCM Members and thus to de-block the current stalemate that has developed in the judiciary sphere.

“For two weeks, the document will be discussed at public consultations so that the civil society and all the interested sides could have the possibility to take part in the discussion process”, said the Premier.

As was already reported by Infotag, the bill was approved by the Government last Wednesday. It was proposed in the document to add to the SCM one more representative of the judges’ community and two representatives from university professors of law. The bill also stipulates that the representatives of the judiciary corps are delegated to the SCM through the holding of elections.

Presently, the Superior Council of Magistracy consists of the Supreme Court Chairperson, Minister of Justice, Prosecutor General, 6 judges and 3 professors of law. For several times in a row, the Council has been unable to hold its meetings due to lack of quorum.
