VIOREL MORARI WOULD NOT CONFESS HIS GUILT AND IS REFUSING TO COLLABORATE WITH INVESTIGATION - PGO

13 january, 2020

Detained ex-prosecutor Viorel Morari, dismissed as Head of the Anti-Corruption Prosecution Service, is refusing to confess his guilt or to collaborate with the investigation, and he even threatened to the prosecutor conducting his case, reported the Prosecutor General's Office.

"All these facts will be investigated according to the law. Viorel Morari was indicted. The Prosecution Service is demanding to place him under arrest", the Office wrote in its press release on Monday. According to the document, Morari is suspected of accepting in March 2017 a complaint from the Democratic Party leader, business tycoon Vlad Plahotniuc, which he registered in defiance of the law.

"Besides that, Morari started an investigation and initiated a criminal litigation as well as falsified several essential documents in that case. Those actions were undertaken in the interests of Plahotniuc and of several persons from his nearest surrounding so as to defend them and thus prevent their becoming suspects in the criminal case of the one-billion-dollar bank fraud as well as to hinder a prompt, all-out and objective investigation", said the PGO press release.

The Anticoruptie.md website has reported that the case initiated against Viorel Morari for his abusing his official position and falsifying public documents is being conducted by Prosecutor Vladislav Caruceru, who was until recently one of the figures in the case being investigated by the Anti-Corruption Prosecution Service.

"Last autumn, Anticoruptie started a criminal litigation against Caruceru who, according to sources, warned the people, involved in the money laundering schemes in the Metalferos Company, about the police search that was to be started in the company on the following day. The case file contains photographs and video records of how Caruceru was warning a key company manager about the search", said the PGO press release.
