EXPERT CANNOT UNDERSTAND WHY RETURNING CITIZENS SHOULD BE GIVEN FREE HEALTH INSURANCE POLICIES

01 april, 2020

There are no grounds for issuing free health insurance policies to Moldova citizens returning home after long staying in foreign countries, believes Alexandru Muravschi, Moldova’s former Deputy Prime Minister, former Minister of Economy and ex-parliamentarian.

Commenting on the opposition’s call to issue such policies to all returning Moldovan gastarbeiters, Muravschi wrote in social networks that he is categorically against whatever discounts, and the more so – against gratuitous issuing of health insurance policies to compatriots, arriving to Moldova massively “to wait out the storm”.

The prominent economist reminded that the country’s health system is based on the taxes paid by citizens residing and working in the country.

“The national health system is holding up also on the patriotism and honest labor of Moldovan health sector employees working for peanuts. Why should they serve for free to the army of those, who did not wish to withhold hardships here and to invest their forces and knowledge in the building of the native country, and who left Moldova in hard times?” wondered Alexandru Muravschi.

The expert named “a sheer demagogy” the assertions of Right politicians that Moldova allegedly lives on gastarbeiters’ money.

“The country lives on the money of its taxpayers, while the gastarbeiters maintain only their families. Gratitude and applauses to them for this – but only from their relatives. The money they send home makes a certain influence on economy, but not very great. Without this money, we in Moldova would simply be importing less, and our shops would be offering 5 sorts of sausages less than now, and we would build a couple of apartment houses less. Such would be an effect. So, there is no use flirting with the public. Yes, they are our citizens, though many of them work abroad with another country’s passports in pocket. Yes, they need help in a hard moment, and we welcome them home. But they should not count on a freebie”, wrote Alexandru Muravschi.

On Tuesday, MP Alexandru Slusari, Deputy Chairman of the opposition political party called DA Platform, stated that payment for health insurance policies for Moldova citizens returning from abroad should be cancelled or reduced by 75%. “These are our compatriots who now need the help of that very State, which has long existed on their earnings. Another way of treating them would be just amoral”, stated the politician who constantly criticizes the Government and stands up with one populist project after another.
