OVER 60,000 MOLDOVA CITIZENS, STAYING IN FOREIGN COUNTRIES AND RESIDING IN TRANSNISTRIA, HAVE GOT REGISTERED FOR NOVEMBER 1 VOTING

More than 60 thousand citizens of Moldova, staying in foreign countries or residing permanently in the Transnistrian region, have got registered for the November 1 voting in the country's presidential election.

Out of the 60,030 applications, 2819 were sent in on the paper, the Central Election Commission reported on Thursday.

The CEC has requested the Information and Security Service (ISS) and the Ministry of the Interior to check the authenticity of the personal data indicated in the applications for the preliminary registration done in the written form or in the Internet.

According to the law, polling stations, including abroad, must be opened not later than 35 days to the voting date, i.e. by September 26 at the latest.

The CEC reported on Wednesday that the largest numbers of Moldovan compatriots who have applied for the preliminary registration are in Italy - over 10 thousand, in Great Britain - 8 thousand, Russia - 5.8 thousand, and Germany - over 5 thousand.

According to the data provided by the Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration before the previous presidential election held on October 30, 2016, the number of Moldova citizens staying in foreign countries was then 805,509, including 477,949 - in Russia, 142,266 - in Italy, 47,754 - in the United States, 17,565 - in Canada, 17,237 - in Ukraine, 16,202 - in Spain; 14,815 - in Germany, and so forth. However, only 3,570 citizens got registered for voting then.

Nevertheless, then-Government of Moldova opened 100 polling stations in 33 countries, namely 25 in Italy, 11 in Romania, 8 in Russia, 7 in the United States, 6 in France etc.
