MOLDOVA LACKS MORE THAN SEVEN THOUSAND TEACHERS - EDUCATION MINISTER

12 april, 2024

Minister of Education, Science and Research Dan Perciun said that Moldova currently lacks more than seven thousand teachers. He said this on Thursday evening during a program on the public TV channel Moldova 1.

"The shortage of teachers in Moldova has already reached threatening proportions. If all teachers had the norm of only one school day and were not overloaded, the system would be short of 7,000 teachers. We are closing this shortage through retirees and increasing the norm for working teachers. We have 1,000 teacher graduates, but only 250 go to school every year. If no one gets sick and no one retires, it will take us 30 years to fill the shortage at the current rate of recruitment," the minister stressed.

He also noted that the ministry has set itself the task of creating a network of model schools offering modern facilities for teachers and students.

"For this purpose, 35 educational institutions have been selected in district centers, in which large-scale investments will be made so that they become poles of attraction for pupils from nearby settlements. More than 2 million euros will be invested in each of the 35 schools. All this should lead to the consolidation of educational institutions and reduce the shortage of personnel," Minister Dan Perciun concluded.
