​CHISINAU MAYOR HONORS MEMORY OF VICTIMS OF THE 1903 JEWISH POGROM

On Wednesday, Chisinau Mayor Ion Ceban honored the memory of the victims of the Jewish pogrom in Chisinau in 1903. In the mourning events in Alunelul Park (formerly a Jewish cemetery was located here - "I.") he said that "now they don't even remember that about 50% of Chisinau residents 100 years ago were Jews."

"They made a great contribution to the city. I'm talking about architecture, medicine, education. The tragedy that happened should not be repeated. The 1903 pogrom deeply affected our city and the Jewish community, 49 people were killed, 500 were injured, and many buildings in Chisinau were destroyed. Residents of Chisinau were forced to leave the country afterward, including the first mayor of Tel Aviv, Meir Dizengoff," the mayor recalled.

Ceban expressed condolences to the citizens of Israel "in these difficult times, in light of the latest attacks on Israel."

"I strongly condemn these conflicts, no human being should suffer because of military disagreements," Ceban said.

The municipality's press release noted that the 2023 documentary "The Tragedy of Chisinau. Jewish Pogrom – 1903." Thanks to the projects realized in cooperation with the Jewish associations of Moldova, the Mayor's Office is involved in preserving the memory of the 1903 pogrom. The capital's administration financed the installation of information plaques on the buildings of Chisinau, the restoration of monuments and public gardens that preserve the memory of that tragic period.
