WB TO HELP TRANSNISTRIA MODERNIZE STATISTICS SERVICES

15 march, 2018

The unrecognized Transnistrian Moldovan republic (PMR) is interested in methodological cooperation with the World Bank, in particular in the field of national statistics, providing public services in electronic form and business climate improvement, said region's government head Alexander Martynov, receiving WB delegation, headed by Bank Country Manager for Moldova Anna Akhalkatsi in Tiraspol on Wednesday.

According to the PMR cabinet of ministers, the premier said that the government already has experience of successful interaction with foreign expert organizations, for example, the German consulting company Berlin Economics.

"The work was quite successful. The company prepared systemic recommendations on building government activities on preparing budget strategy", Martynov said.

Anna Akhalkatsi said that her visit is aimed at discussing the needs the Transnistrian side has and ways to provide assistance in certain issues. According to her, the WB specialists need time for understanding the problems and identifying directions where expert involvement will be maximally efficient, but given the already available groundwork in the field of state statistics, the common work may be started from this field.

On the same day, the WB Country Manager met with Moldovan Deputy Premier, Minister for Reintegration Cristina Lesnic. The meeting was also attended by National Bank of Moldova Ion Sturzu and Director of the National Bureau of Statistics Vitalie Valcov.

Discussing perspectives of launching projects of assistance for modernizing statistics services in the Transnistrian region, meeting participants said that projects should be implemented transparently, on agreement with the Moldovan Government and in accordance with the goals and priorities of the republic reintegration policy. Besides, all the adopted measures should be coordinated with the Bureau for Reintegration and the National Bureau of Statistics.

The meeting stakeholders stressed that at processing statistic rates the international requirements should be observed in the field of personal data protection, ensuring basic human rights and freedoms, as well as access to restricted information.
