GAGAUZIA PARLIAMENT FAILS TO ADOPT BENEFITS FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT VETERANS

19 february, 2020

The Gagauzia Popular Assembly (GPA) failed to overcome the veto of Gagauzia Bashkan [governor] Irina Vlah, who refused to sign benefits for veterans of the autonomy law enforcement structures.

For adopting positive decision, the votes of two-thirds of GPA members are necessary - 22 of 35. At the Tuesday's sitting 14 MPs voted for the adoption of the law, while 14 - against.

In December 2019, the GPA adopted the law which implies payments worth 1388 lei per month for veterans of the "Bugeac" battalion. The Bashkan refused to sign the document, explaining this with the violation of the procedure of its adoption.

Vlah reminded at the sitting that there was no program of social support to the population in Gagauzia before 2016.

"The law on providing benefits to law enforcement veterans was adopted in 2013. However, nobody was paying anything to them until 2016. In 2016 we established compensations worth 1.5 thousand lei per year in the budget. Later, the indexation was conducted and now veterans are receiving 1.8 thousand lei per year", Vlah said.

She drew the MPs attention to the fact that these funds have not been provided in the Law on the 2020 Budget.
