​GOVERNMENT APPROVES AMENDMENTS TO THE LAW ON MONUMENTS

The government on Tuesday approved a draft containing a number of amendments to the law on monuments erected in public places.

According to INFOTAG, the draft is aimed at decentralization of powers in the erection of monuments. Thus, the first and second level local public administration authorities, as well as the authorities of Gagauzia, will have the right to decide on the erection of monuments on the land belonging to them.

However, the decisions can be taken only after a positive opinion of the Ministry of Culture. Until now, the government approval was required to erect a monument at the local level. Assignment of national protection status will remain a matter for parliament.

The draft also stipulates that the government can initiate a procedure to dismantle monuments with local protection status if they violate public order or contradict public morals.
